January 26 at the Ossining HS Library!


Sponsored by the Ossining School District,
The Ossining Staff Development Center and
the College of New Rochelle


Cost: $1,087 for 3-graduate credits
(a 50% reduction in cost)

Classes will be held right here at Ossining High School!
15 total credits are required for certification

One-year accelerated program.*
*Under review for New York State Education Department

Course Description:
Foundation, theory and practice of bilingual general and special education, multicultural perspectives in education, including an overview of linguistics and English grammar.

 

Dates of sessions Tuesdays: January 26, February 2, 9, 23, March 2 and Thursdays: January 28, February 4, 11, 25, and March 4, 2010 (Snow Dates: To be determined.)

Course Description: 
Methods, materials and assessment criteria used to teach English as a second language to limited English (LEP) proficient students, including those with disabilities, at the elementary and secondary levels to meet the English as a Second Language Learning Standards (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and assessment requirements in the state of New York.
         

 

Dates of sessions:  Tuesdays: March 9, 23, April 6, 13, 20 and Thursdays: March 18, 25, April 8, 15 and 22, 2010 (Snow Dates: Tuesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 29, 2010)

Course Description:  
In-depth study of the curriculum, instruction and assessment in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction of limited English proficient (LEP) students, including those with disabilities, to meet the ESL Learning Standards (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and assessment requirements in the state of New York.

 

Dates of Sessions Tuesdays: May 4, 11, 18, 25, June 1 and Thursdays: May 6, 13, 20, 27 and June 3, 2010 (Emergency Dates: Tuesdays, June 8 and Thursday, June 10 as needed)


Time:  4 PM to 8 PM

5. Content Area - Level I - Second Language Acquisition and Literacy Development in Core Subject Areas for Second Language Learners - (3 credits)

 

Course Description:  Fundamentals of the second language acquisition process and its impact on literacy development in core subject areas, including interdisciplinary practices that incorporate the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing in English through English as a second language (ESL) methodologies, with a focus on reading and writing in the core areas of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, as indicated in the NYS Learning Standards for grades K-12. 
 

Dates of Sessions: Saturday, June 26, Monday, June 28, Tuesday, June 29, Wednesday, June 30, and Thursday, July 1, 2010

6. Content Area - Level II - Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language in Core Subject Areas - (3 credits)

Course Description:  Methods, materials and assessment criteria used to teach core subject areas in English to limited English proficient students, including those with disabilities.  Focus should be given to meet the language arts modalities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) for English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction in the content areas of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, as indicated in the NYS Learning Standards for grades K-12.
